A Guide to Developing a Training Plan for Advancing Business Analysis Competencies

The Business Analysis Competency Model® describes the knowledge, skills, abilities, and personal characteristics required for a person to perform effectively as a business analysis professional. Derived from the BABOK® Guide it is a skills assessment tool and a professional development guide. The BABOK® Guide describes the knowledge required to perform business analysis, while the Competency Model addresses the remaining aspects of competency.

  • Identifies 30 Business Analysis performance competencies with behavioural indicators and techniques associated with each level of business analysis performed
  • Assists in understanding the levels of competency in the business analysis profession with mappings of the performance competencies and job profiles to BABOK® Guide Techniques, Tasks, and Underlying Competencies
  • Supports the three levels of IIBA's Multi-Level Competency-Based Certification program by highlighting the key competency components associated with each business analysis task
  • Evaluates current levels against standard levels of performance to understand proficiency levels

Recognized globally as the standard of business analysis, it guides business professionals within the six core knowledge areas, describing the skills, deliverables, and techniques that business analysis professionals require to achieve better business outcomes.

  • Apply the six knowledge areas (KAs) from A Guide to the Business Analysis Body of Knowledge® (BABOK® Guide) v3. (chapters 3-8), in the context of BA roles and responsibilities performed at all levels of the profession
  • Understand and assess business analysis skill levels against the thirty performance competencies and the different techniques used to demonstrate them

Organizational usage is available through IIBA Partner Program or an Organizational License purchased from IIBA. An Organizational License or Membership allows usage of the model by organizations that employ business analysis professionals. The Organizational License allows organizations and teams to:

  • Share the model internal to the team and organization
  • Customize The Business Analysis Competency Model for internal organizational usage
  • Use the model as part of your Business Analysis training, development, performance, or HR processes
  • Use the Business Analysis Competency Assessment and Business Analysis Competency Development Workbook in your organization or team

* Business Analysis roles within organizations vary and may not align to the exact competencies and indicators in this Competency Model. This Model is based on the role of the Business Analysis as aligned with the BABOK® Guide. For professionals or organizations, the model may need to be tailored to add or subtract competencies that fit and align to the Business Analysis role within your organization.
