Real Skills. Real Readiness. Unpacking the New ECBA
The business analysis profession continues to grow and adapt, and so must the certifications that support it. That’s why we’re evolving the Entry Certificate in Business Analysis (ECBA) to better reflect the foundational skills and knowledge today’s organizations value, both in early-career professionals and those applying business analysis at any career stage.
In our recent webinar, "Real Skills. Real Readiness: ECBA Unpacked," my colleague Isabel Feher-Watters, Manager of Certification Programs and Operations, and I had the opportunity to walk through what’s changing with the ECBA, why it matters, and how the IIBA community is supporting your path to certification success.
If you couldn’t attend or you’re looking for a quick recap, here’s a summary of the key highlights, along with responses to the most frequently asked questions from the live session.
Why the ECBA Changed
We know from employers and industry leaders that they’re looking for business analysis professionals who can contribute meaningfully, right from day one. In response, we’ve updated the ECBA to emphasize practical, job-ready skills and deeper reasoning about situations in context, moving toward application-based assessment.
This change is grounded in a comprehensive global analysis of key responsibilities in foundational business analysis. We conducted a global practice analysis study, collaborated with practitioners from across the profession, and developed a new exam blueprint that aligns with real-world expectations.
Common Questions, Clear Answers
During the webinar, you asked some great questions. Here are the top ones, with clear answers to help you prepare for the new ECBA.
Is the ECBA still foundational?
Absolutely. The ECBA is tailored for people just starting their business analysis journey—whether you’re a recent graduate, a career switcher, a junior professional aiming to build solid skills and confidence, or simply interested in beginning to apply business analysis in your work, at any career stage.
How many questions are on the exam?
The updated exam has 50 questions, including situation-based and traditional multiple-choice. We extended the exam duration from 60 to 75 minutes to give candidates more time to read and reflect on the situation-based questions.
What’s the balance between situational and standard multiple-choice questions?
About two-thirds of the questions test how you’d apply your knowledge in realistic situations, while the rest focus on your understanding of foundational concepts. When studying or developing training materials, aim to emphasize real-world application, situational and contextual examples of business analysis challenges, and reasoning over recall.
I see that there are two references for the new exam—The Business Analysis Standard and A Guide to the Business Analysis Body of Knowledge (BABOK Guide). What should I focus on within these references?
The ECBA Reference Map details which sections to study. From the Standard, candidates should focus on the Business Analysis Core Concept Model (BACCM) and foundational mindset concepts. From the BABOK Guide, candidates should focus on the 30 business analysis tasks, the 29 underlying competencies, and selected techniques.
Do I have to study all 50 techniques in the BABOK Guide?
No, just 20 key techniques outlined in the ECBA Exam Blueprint. Note also that the new exam tests understanding of the techniques’ purpose, description, and usage considerations from chapter 10 of the BABOK Guide. Studying technique elements isn’t required.
I bought the exam before the update—can I still take the current version?
Yes! You can take the current ECBA exam until July 20, 2025. Plus, if you don’t pass on your first try, you’re eligible for a free retake through our special promotion (until July 20). You must be an IIBA member, though. Get all the details here.
What happens after July 21, 2025?
Starting July 21, all English ECBA exams will use the new format. The current version of the exam will continue to be available in Canadian French, Standard French, Chinese, Japanese, and Brazilian Portuguese after July 21. Once translation work for the new exam is complete and ready for publication, we’ll announce the launch dates for the respective languages.
When will I get my results?
If you take the new exam after July 21, your results won’t be immediate. We’ll conduct a passing standard study with subject matter experts to set the passing score. Results will start releasing on October 6, 2025. After that, candidates will get their results right after finishing the exam.
Will the ECBA look different and have a new name?
No. The certificate’s design and name remain the same—only the exam content has been updated. And whether you already hold the ECBA or are working to earn it, your certificate continues to be valid and valued. You’re part of a global network of professionals who helped shape—and continue to shape—the future of business analysis.
Is the ECBA a prerequisite for certifications like CBAP?
No. You don’t need the ECBA before pursuing the Certification of Capability in Business Analysis (CCBA) or Certified Business Analysis Professional (CBAP), but it’s a great first step for those early in their careers.
Is the ECBA suitable for experienced business analysis professionals?
It’s designed primarily for early-career professionals. We encourage seasoned professionals to consider the CCBA or CBAP. However, those who supervise business analysis professionals on a cross-disciplinary team may also find the ECBA valuable in understanding foundational business analysis work.
Once I pass the PSI system compatibility check, am I good to go?
Almost! Be sure to review The IIBA Guide to Online Remote Proctored Exams for tips on system and environment readiness, so exam day goes smoothly.
