These globally recognized certifications are cornerstones of the business analysis profession. Each one is designed to fit a different stage in your career, and discovering which one aligns with you is the first step toward your next big achievement.

Let’s explore which certification aligns best with your experience.

Your Next Achievement

CCBA: Step Up Your Capability

The Certification of Capability in Business Analysis (CCBA) is ideal for professionals with a few years of business analysis experience who want to demonstrate they can handle greater responsibility. It’s the perfect step for those ready to tackle more complex projects and demonstrate real capability.

Who should aim for the CCBA?

  • Professionals with two to three years of business analysis experience
  • Individuals who regularly collaborate with stakeholders to define needs and solutions
  • Anyone looking to tackle more and prepare for senior roles

What it takes:

  • 3,750 hours of business analysis work over the past seven years (with at least 900 hours in two knowledge areas or 500 hours in four, aligned with the BABOK Guide)
  • 21 hours of professional development in the last four years
  • Two professional references
  • A three-hour, 130-question exam featuring scenario-based multiple-choice questions

CBAP: Demonstrate Leadership and Expertise

The Certified Business Analysis Professional (CBAP) is designed for seasoned business analysis professionals who have led complex initiatives, mentored teammates, and contributed to strategic decision-making. Earning this credential signals leadership, expertise, and a global standard of excellence.

Who should aim for the CBAP?

  • Professionals with over five years of business analysis experience
  • Individuals in senior and strategic roles
  • Those involved in high-impact projects and mentoring others
  • Anyone seeking recognition as an expert in business analysis

What it takes:

  • 7,500 hours of business analysis work over the last 10 years, including 900 hours in four of the six BABOK Guide knowledge areas, for a minimum total of 3,600 hours toward the required 7,500
  • 35 hours of professional development in the past four years
  • Two professional references
  • A 3.5-hour, 120-question exam featuring multiple-choice and scenario-based questions

Map Out Your Journey

Preparation is key, whether you’re aiming for the CCBA or CBAP. Here’s how to keep on track:

  • Know the details: Review the relevant handbook (CCBA or CBAP) to confirm eligibility, exam format, and scheduling options
  • Build a study plan: Map your knowledge and experience to the exam blueprint and competencies, set aside dedicated study time, explore endorsed training courses, and join a study group or chapter community for accountability and support
  • Lock in your exam date: Apply and select a convenient exam date—ideally before December 30. Online proctored exams let you test remotely. Just make sure your setup meets the requirements. Bonus: Complete your exam by December 30 to save 20%!*
  • Connect with a mentor: If possible, chat with someone who has successfully navigated the certification process.
