The Reality of Volunteering
Let’s be real: volunteering isn’t always easy. If it were, chances are there wouldn’t be an award specifically aimed at recognizing it. Volunteering demands time, energy, and a deep sense of commitment. Many of our volunteers juggle full-time jobs, family responsibilities, and personal priorities while still finding time to serve.
They work behind the scenes to negotiate partnerships, create valuable programs, and foster community connections—all without compensation. That kind of selflessness is truly inspiring, and it makes my job that much more rewarding.
The Power of Recognition
As part of the Chapters and Member Engagement team at IIBA, one of my most important responsibilities is to recognize and celebrate these contributions. For me, recognition isn’t the proverbial cherry on top of the cake. I like to think of it as the flour that holds everything together. Without it, the cake simply wouldn’t exist!
That’s why we’ve put formal processes in place to ensure that our volunteers feel seen and appreciated. The annual IIBA Volunteer Awards are a key part of this. They shine a spotlight on those who have gone above and beyond in their service, and they serve as a reminder of the power of community and the impact that one person can make.

She has a strong customer focus, high energy, and great organizational skills that are key to her work coordinating IIBA's volunteer program. Michelle actively engages with both internal stakeholders to determine the volunteer needs and communicate and collaborate with the business analysis community to recruit, nurture, and build relationships with our volunteers.
